This programme supported refugee families as they settled into life in Aotearoa New Zealand by building digital confidence, skills, and access. It focused on helping newcomers use digital technology to connect, learn, and participate more fully in their new communities.
The programme supported both parents and children to develop essential digital skills, enabling them to become active learners, access online education and employment opportunities, and stay connected with whānau, friends, and events in their countries of origin.
Families from refugee communities across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Kirikiriroa Hamilton, Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington, Papaioea Palmerston North, Whakatū Nelson, Ōtepoti Dunedin, and Waihōpai Invercargill participated in the programme. Working with culturally diverse communities was a privilege, and the programme recognised the strength, perspective, and wisdom that new New Zealanders bring to their communities.
Through the programme, around 200 refugee families each year were supported with refurbished computers and internet access, removing key barriers to digital inclusion. Alongside this, regionally based training providers delivered tailored digital skills training, family liaison support, and technical assistance.
The programme achieved strong outcomes for families and communities alike, supporting successful settlement, strengthening digital inclusion, and empowering refugee whānau to engage with education, employment, and community life as they made Aotearoa New Zealand their home.
