Rangatahi Ai Experience

The AI Literacy workshops

Our partnership with Tōnui Collab was a successful delivery of the Rangatahi AI Experience on the East Coast.

Through this collaboration, we supported their AI Literacy programme, helping to reduce barriers and provide rangatahi in Te Tairāwhiti with meaningful access to AI education.

The AI Literacy workshops equipped rangatahi with a strong foundation in future-focused technology. Participants developed practical AI skills through hands-on activities, including exploring data bias and practising effective prompting using a range of AI tools. They were also inspired by connecting with Māori AI professionals, gaining insight into how AI is applied across real-world work, creativity, and innovation.

The programme supported the development of essential skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving, while also strengthening overall digital and technology literacy. Rangatahi engaged in thoughtful discussions around AI ethics, data privacy, and the wider social impacts of emerging technologies.

Over 60 rangatahi took part in the programme, leaving with not only new knowledge but increased confidence and curiosity about their futures. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the programme’s impact and relevance for rangatahi in the region.

Te Taitokerau Northland Connect: Bridging the Digital Divide

Specifically prioritising Māori, Pasifika, and individuals with NCEA Level 1 or below.

From July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025, Katoa Connect delivered a targeted programme to help 40 Northland whānau achieve digital equity. This initiative focused on second chance learners, specifically prioritising Māori, Pasifika, and individuals with NCEA Level 1 or below to improve their digital participation.

We are incredibly grateful to Foundation North for their support, which allows us to deliver this vital programme to our communities and support our whānau in their digital journeys.

Programme Outcomes

  • In Person Learning: Participants completed 20 hours of training in small, collaborative groups of 10.
  • Real-World Skills: The curriculum covered essential daily tasks, including online banking, shopping, managing health services, and foundational Google Cloud skills.
  • Supportive Environment: Our team utilised clear, respectful communication and strong administrative skills to ensure smooth coordination and high quality results.

By immersing learners in practical scenarios, we have empowered them to connect more effectively with whānau and their community.

“It is a privilege to deliver this programme. We recognise that even with a digital connection, many whānau don’t yet feel confident enough to fully explore online spaces. Our goal is to provide the clarity and support they need to navigate the digital world with ease.”
